Hopefield Cemetery |
|
| The Hopefield Cemetery, located 4 miles west and 1/2 north of Moundridge, KS, contains the remains of many Swiss Mennonite pioneers and is therefore considered of particular
importance to all Swiss Mennonite descendants. This cemetery is now the property of the Swiss Mennonite Cultural and Historical Association (SMCHA). As agreed by the SMCHA Board of Directors, a project
of the Association is to construct a directory building to assist visitors in locating the tombstones of their ancestors. Work on this facility began in 2000; about $10,000 are needed to complete construction
and landscaping. This directory building is expected to become an attractive and valuable feature of the Hopefield Cemetery. To facilitate knowledge of our ancestral heritage, all descendants of the Swiss Mennonite immigrants are invited to contribute to construction of the directory building and preparation of a printed directory of all those buried at Hopefield. A contribution from the respective families of $1 is suggested for each Swiss Mennonite pioneer buried at Hopefield. This tax-deductible contribution may be made by check payable to SMCHA and sent to the Treasurer of the Association (see the web page link with names and addresses of SMCHA officers). A receipt will be provided by return mail. SMCHA is pleased to help those attempting to locate ancestors who may be buried in the cemetery. To facilitate SMCHA in this regard, please download and complete the form listed below (or create a similar one) as fully as possible and place a check near the name of the individual believed to be buried at Hopefield. Send the completed form to Arnold M. Wedel, Box 86, North Newton, KS 67117 who will review this information and respond with his findings. An additional valuable background source for this search may be the book by James W. Krehbiel, Swiss-Russian Mennonite Families Before 1874. To indicate your ancestors buried in the Hopefield cemetery put a check mark after their name. Some of you also have great great great grandparents etc. buried in the cemetery. Please list those on a separate sheet. You may want to contribute for your children, grandchildren etc. Please list their names with addresses on a separate sheet. You may print this page with the chart below or build your own similar chart.
