The SMCHA board met May 3, 2001 at 10am at the Moundridge Senior Center with Arnold Wedel presiding. Present were Arnold Wedel, Delbert Goering, Ozzie Goering, Rich Preheim, Harold Schrag and Vernell Kaufman. Maynard Krehbiel, Ben J. Stucky, Glenn Stucky and Leann Toews were absent.

Minutes of the March 8 meeting were reviewed. Accepted by consensus as printed.

Checking Account  $3610.63
Savings(Cemetery Building)  $3719.06

Motion by Rich, seconded by Harold to accept the treasurer's report. Carried.

Discussion as to whether SMCHA should own the land on which the 1943 marker is placed. Perhaps we should own it if we assume responsibility to take care of it. Delbert or another Eden board member is responsible to check with Eden trustees if Eden is willing to deed to SMCHA their interest in the property.

A letter and check was received from Donna Kaufman Neufeld and Neva Belle Kaufman Adamson Stucky reserving four burial plots in the Hopefield Cemetery. A copy of the letter has been put in the Secretary's book. For future burial plot reservations at Hopefield, Larry Stucky should be contacted.

Portion of a letter from Jacob D. Goering was read telling about the oak trees which grew from acorns picked up in the Ukraine from the "Counsel Oak" tree where perhaps Elder Jacob Stucky conducted some meetings. It was suggested that one of these trees be planted at the Hopefield cemetery. Agreed to do it in Fall since it is now too late in the season.

Rich reported that Schowalter Foundation will not fund projects that are already underway, so we are not eligible to get money to help with the cemetery building.

Fund raising was again discussed. So far we have only 24 donors. We need more. After visible progress is made on the cemetery building, letters should be sent to members and former members concerning our goal and how much we have received. Also, letters should be put in church boxes to non-member Schweitzers. Ozzie agreed to bring to the next meeting a sample letter asking for funds. This letter would need to meet board approval.

Web Update--$35 renewal registration for Web site was paid. Eugene Waltner is finishing Web page by June 1. May try a monthly feature beginning in July depending on the Web committee. Question whether we should advertise cemetery plots. Maybe yes but few details. Addresses for board members were checked. Harold moved, Delbert seconded that we ask Eugene Waltner to be our Webmaster. Carried. By consensus that Jim Goering be chairman of the Web committee and that he recommend additional members.

Vernell will talk to J.O. Schrag concerning the program he had planned to give at Life Enrichment. Could it be incorporated into the Schweitzer program for Fall Fest?

Question as to whether we have money to be given for research. $300 has been proposed in the budget.

Membership was again discussed. Rich was asked to bring to the next meeting suggested membership guidelines separating membership dues from the banquet tickets.

Ozzie handed out an announcement concerning the $500 Educational Service Scholarship Grant.

Dismissed at 11:50am.

Next meeting: Thursday, June 7, 2001, 10am. Moundridge Senior Center

Vernell Kaufman, Secretary
