SMCHA BOARD MEETING MINUTES
|
|
| The SMCHA Board met May 2, 2002 at 3pm in the Eden
Church Fellowship Hall with Arnold Wedel presiding as chairman. Present were
Arnold Wedel, Rich Preheim, Ozzie Goering, Maynard Krehbiel, Ben Stucky, Gary
Stucky, Harold Schrag and Vernell Kaufman. Leann Toews and Jay Goering were
absent. T. James Goering, Donna Kaufman Neufeld and Neva Belle Adamson Stucky
attended as resource persons. Minutes of the March 14 meeting were reviewed. A spelling correction was made. Lee Monrow should read Lee Mondrow. The minutes were accepted by consensus as corrected. In the absence of the treasurer, Arnold gave the treasurer's report. It was noted that at our last annual business meeting our total accounts or assets amounted to $4271.98 more than a year ago. Ben moved, Rich seconded to accept the treasurer's report. Harold, Maynard and Arnold traveled to Vanada Stone Co. at Sylvan Grove. They ordered 30 stone posts at $50 each to be used as markers in the cemetery. Paid 50% down. The company will deliver them. The bulletin board committee feels the posts need to be installed before they can complete the directory. The book by James W. Krehbiel should be made available at the cemetery for added intormation about those buried at Hopefield and also those who probably were buried there. Should we schedule times for the Memorial Day weekend when someone from the SMCHA board would be at the cemetery to help persons locate their relatives? If interested in helping, contact Arnold. Donna Neufeld reported on the newsletter, "Schweitzer Salt". She and Neva Belle Adamson Stucky did a fine job editing the paper and were commended for their good work. 1500 copies were printed. 150 were sent by mail and most of the others were distributed through the churches. More copies can be printed and will be sent out if more addresses are provided. Donna also asked for feedback on the newsletter and suggestions for the next newsletter. T. James Goering gave an update on the Web. No name change. We would have to start over from the very beginning. Our name, www.swissmennonite.org has again been registered for another year. Dennis Quiring has been hired as the new Webmaster. An employment contract was agreed to. Dennis will recieve $12 per month plus $40 an hour if some special additional work is required. Ozzie reported that the Scholarship committee has again sent to the Swisss-Volhynian churches notice of the $500 scholarship available. Could this money be given to someone who has graduated from college and is now doing Voluntary Service work? Needs further discussion. Letters of thanks need to be written to those on the board or on committees whose terms expired last year. Discussed what to do with SMCHA material that has accumulated like old minutes, etc. Suggestion was made to put it in the Mennonite Library and Archives at Bethel College. What are the benefits of being a SMCHA member? The newsletter is one. Could we give the book, "The Challenging Faith" at a reduced rate? How about charging $250 for burial rites at Hopefield and only $200 if you are a member? More discussion needed. Ozzie will talk to J. O. Schrag about the Fall Festival Program. Arnold will correspond with Jerry Stahly about being speaker for our Fall Banquet. Story of "The Chortitza Oak" tree as provided by Jacob D. Goering will be presented next time. Meeting adjourned at 5pm. Next meeting, Thursday, June 6 at 9am. Eden Church. Vernell Kaufman, Secretary |
