SMCHA BOARD MEETING MINUTES
October 9, 2002

The SMCHA board met Oct. 9, 2002 at 3:30pm at the Eden Church with Arnold Wedel presiding as chairman. Present were Arnold Wedel, Jay Goering, Maynard Krehbiel, Rich Preheim, Ozzie Goering, Harold Schrag and Vernell Kaufman. Scott Waltner attended as the Hopefield representative. Leann Toews, Ben J. Stucky and Gary Stucky were absent.

Minutes of the Sept. 5 meeting were reviewed. The last sentence on the page should read "to restore Kenny Goering's Grandma's grave, " not Grandpa's. A paragraph which had been omitted by mistake was added to the minutes. The minutes were accepted by consensus as corrected.

Jay presented the treasurer's report.

10-10-2 Checking Account $49.59
Cemetery Endowment Fund $14,402.28
Cemetery Building Fund $1,971.48
Swiss Money Market $5,411.26

Treasurer's report accepted by consensus.

Sweitzer program for Fall Festival was discussed. Persons involved are Maynard and Marlene, Lowell Goering, Arlen Ortman from S. Dakota, Helen Goering and Vic Goering. Ticket takers are Ben and Ozzie.

Rich made a motion to have our annual banquet in spring. Discussion as to the date. Jerry Stahly was willing to come April 12 but that is MCC sale date so the item was tabled until the next meeting.

Scholarship guidelines were discussed. Need more clarity. Maybe the by-laws committee could help to make decisions.

Announcement to be made at Fall Festival concerning restoration of graves at the Hopefield Cemetery. "SMCHA has engaged the services of a person who is willing to restore the graves. Persons who are interested in having graves restored may indicate and make a donation to SMCHA.  Restoration will proceed in the next few years on a first donation-first restoration basis. Approximate restoration cost for a grave may be obtained from Arnold Wedel or Harold Schrag." Hopefully the cemetery directory bulletin board will be in operation by banquet time. Question was raised whether we need a cemetery map in the directory. Need to check the minutes.

Announcement was made that Delbert Goering has tickets available for the McPherson County Historical Banquet to be held Nov.2 at the Sugarcreek School 1 3/4 miles north of Galva.

Moved to adjourn at 4:50pm.

Next meeting: Thursday afternoon, Nov. 14, 2002, 3:30pm. Eden Church.
